So where did our name come from? Well, it’s an interesting story...
In January 1925 a diphtheria epidemic raged through Nome, Alaska, striking down the old, the sick, and the children. The only serum that could stop the outbreak was in Anchorage one thousand miles away, but ferocious winter storms had grounded all aircraft and any hope of quick delivery. In desperation, officials decided to move the medicine by dog sled.
The world watched, transfixed, as a race against death began. Over 20 mushers and their sled teams rushed to the relief of the stricken city, across dangerous ice and treacherous waters, through white-out blizzards and temperatures of -85˚ Fahrenheit.
Togo was one of the smallest dogs to lead a team, but he made up for it with fierce focus and a fighting heart. Undersized at only 48 pounds, he nevertheless led his team nearly 100 miles, twice as far as any other team and through the most difficult terrain. Nearly six days after setting out, the final sled team and serum reached Nome and saved the town from further loss of life.
Today, the Nome Serum Run and the journey of the sled dogs that saved so many are memorialized in the famed Iditarod Trail.
From the example of those indomitable spirits who strove to complete a mission of health against all odds, we take our inspiration and make our promise:
